Additional photos of life in Rwanda
This is part of an extensive collection of mountain gorilla photos made by Boyd Norton over the past twenty years. Some of these are new, some were made during work on his book, The Mountain Gorilla, published by Voyageur Press in 1990. Included here is also a smattering of life in rural Rwanda, farms and farmlands, poverty, children, general slice-of-life photos. (Much more is available; contact us) The tragedy of the 1994 genocide has made life difficult in an already impoverished country. Tourism has once again returned and this is providing significant foreign income. However, across the border in eastern Congo rebel factions are still fighting and making incursions into the forests of Virunga National Park and some of the mountain gorillas there have been killed. There are, at present, about 720 mountain gorillas left in the wild, divided between parks in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
